TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Converting from Quicken to Microsoft Money

Microsoft Money offers a wizard that you can use to convert a
Quicken data file to a Money file. Actually, the wizard doesn't
convert the file. It makes a copy of the Quicken data file,
converts the copy, and leaves the original data file intact. So
if you decide after all that you like Quicken better than Money,
you can go back.

Follow these steps to convert a Quicken data file to Microsoft
Money:

1. Close Quicken if the program is running, and open
Money.

2. Choose File, Convert Quicken File.

3. Find and select your Quicken data file.

Unless you've tinkered with Quicken's default settings, the
Quicken data file is called Qdata.QDG, Qdata.QDF,
Quicken.QDF, or Quicken.QDT, and it is located in the
C:\Quickenw folder.

4. Click Convert.

5. In the Back Up dialog box, click the Back Up button to
back up whatever data file is currently open in Money.

6. Click Next and follow the on-screen directions.

After the conversion is complete, a Summary of the Conversion
window appears and lists account balances in Quicken and account
balances in Money. Compare the two to make sure that the Quicken
data file was converted successfully. You can click Save, save
the file, open it in your word processing program, and print it.

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Driving the Scenic Windward Coast

Stand in the heart of Waikiki with your back to the ocean. To
your right, you'll see a mountain range called the Koolaus
(koo-OO-laus); on the other side of them is the east coast of
Oahu. This windward-facing coast is the island's wettest side
and, therefore, its most lush and gorgeous. Lined with suburban
beach communities and some breathtakingly beautiful beaches, it's
well worth seeing.

Three highways will get you from the city to the Windward Coast
in about 20 minutes or so: the Pali Highway (Highway 61), the
Likelike (lee-kay-LEE-kay) Highway (Highway 63), and the H-3
freeway, all of which cut right through the mountains. Your best
bet from Waikiki is to take the H-1 to the Pali Highway. After
you go through the tunnel, turn left on Kamehameha Highway
(Highway 83); this coastal highway will be your roadway for the
rest of the trip, whether you choose to follow it all the way to
Haleiwa (about 1-1/2 hours without stops), whether you're heading
to the Polynesian Cultural Center (the South Pacific cultural
theme park, or whether you're simply enjoying the ultralush
scenery and some of best beaches in the islands.

Dominating the west side of Oahu is the island's second mountain
range, the Waianae (wah-ee-AN-eh) mountains. Beyond this ridge is
the hot, dry leeward side of the island. You're by no means
prohibited from heading there, but there's not much to see, and
locals prefer to keep this one area of heavily touristed Oahu to
themselves. Unless you're heading to the area's one
master-planned resort community, Ko Olina, up to Waianae to meet
a scheduled cruise with Dolphin Excursions, or for some other
prearranged reason, honor the local wishes and concentrating your
efforts on exploring the other parts of this wonderfully
multifaceted island instead.

Suppose you've come up with a new software program that helps
small business owners manage all the activities of their business
just like the big companies do with their enterprise management
software. You can let the customer select for you the business
model that you will use in selling your product:

* The customer uses the program free of charge, but a
small window in the lower left-hand corner of the
computer screen displays advertising while the program
is running. In other words, in this model, your end
user isn't your customer. The companies that display
their advertisements are your customers, and you
receive your revenues from them.

* The customer purchases the program for a one-time fee
that entitles the customer either to download it from
your Web site or request delivery of a standard
shrink-wrapped CD version.

* By continuously come up with new versions and
enhancements, you encourage the customer to purchase
more from you -- another stream of revenue.

Going one step further with this example, let's say you also
establish a Web site for users of your program. There, they can
find additional information and entertaining features. So how do
you make money off that? Well, again, selling space for
advertising is one way, but you can also charge a membership fee
that puts your users into an elite club, perhaps giving them
access to personal application services that you host.

When training in the martial arts, you increase your
self-confidence as you learn to control your body. Your
self-esteem grows as you master new skills. Being able to see
your ribs again, after they've been buried under fat for years,
can lift even the most downtrodden of spirits.

Self-defense skills may make you braver and more courageous, not
just in the training hall but in the outside world, as well --
and not just when confronting knife-wielding attackers, but when
handling nasty bosses and edgy spouses.

Sometimes, the most dangerous martial artists are green belts,
not black belts. In Tae Kwon Do, for example, a green belt is an
intermediate rank. At this stage, students have learned the basic
techniques and are starting to feel tremendously confident of
their physical skills -- but they haven't developed much humility
yet, so their judgment is poor. Watch out for this stage -- don't
let confidence become overconfidence and get you into situations
you'd do better to avoid.

Although no personal preferences are available in QuickBooks for
sales tax, company preferences do exist. (In the Preferences
dialog box, click the Sales Tax pane, and then the Company
Preferences tab.) The Do You Charge Sales Tax? radio buttons,
which appear near the top of the tab, control whether you can
even charge sales tax within QuickBooks. You select the radio
button -- Yes or No -- that answers the question.

The Owe Sales Tax radio button lets you indicate when the taxing
authority says you owe sales tax: as of the invoice date (which
means the taxing authority requires accrual-basis accounting) or
upon receipt of payment (which means the taxing authority allows
cash-basis accounting).

The Default Sales Tax Codes boxes let you define what code
QuickBooks should use to identify taxable and non-taxable sales.
By default, QuickBooks uses the clever "tax" code for taxable
sales and the equally clever "non" code for non-taxable sales.
However, you can select the Add New entry from the Taxable
drop-down list box or the Non-Taxable drop-down list box and use
the dialog box that QuickBooks displays to create your own
taxable and non-taxable codes.

The Pay Sales Tax radio buttons (Monthly, Quarterly, and
Annually) let you tell QuickBooks how frequently you must remit
sales tax amounts. You select the radio button that corresponds
to your sales tax payment frequency.

The Set Up Sales Tax Items boxes let you set up an item for the
sales tax that you will need to charge on invoices. You can also
indicate the default, or most common, sales tax item that you'll
want to include by entering this sales tax item name into the
Most Common Sales Tax box. To add the sales tax item by using the
Most Common Sales Tax box, select the Add New entry from the
drop-down list box and complete the dialog box that QuickBooks
displays. The New Item dialog box lets you name the sales tax
item and identify the sales tax rate. The Mark Taxable Amounts
with "T" When Printing check box, if selected, tells QuickBooks
to flag taxable amounts on an invoice with the code "T."

visit an Indian reservation, this canyon, south of the central
part of Grand Canyon National Park, fills the bill. Home to some
500 Havasupai people, Havasu Canyon is famous for its
astonishingly turquoise water and for the 200-foot waterfalls
that cascade down vivid red sandstone cliffs into limpid pools.
Swimming in said pools -- and for some people, hiking into and
out of the canyon -- is pretty much all you can do there; the
village consists of fairly run-down homes. If you can stand being
forced to relax in a beautiful spot, though, this area may just
be your place. Keep in mind that Havasu Canyon is a more than a
little bit off the beaten path; you must hike, ride, or book a
helicopter flight to enter, and you must reserve in advance.

From Williams, take I-40 west 44 miles to Seligman, where the
road splits; continue on Highway 66 west for 26 miles and turn
north on Indian Route 18. Drive 60 miles to Haulupai Hilltop,
where the 8-mile-long Hualapai Trail, a fairly precipitous,
winding route (at least for the first mile; it levels off after
that) descends into Supai, Havasu Canyon's only settlement and
home to the Havasupai Tourist Enterprise
[ http://www.havasupaitribe.com/ ] (928-448-2121). A limited
number of people are allowed in (fee $20 per person), so you must
contact the tribe, even if you're just planning to hike. The
Havasupai Tourist Enterprise isn't always easy to reach by phone,
but keep trying.

If you don't want to hike down, contact the tourist enterprise
and arrange for a pack horse or mule to take you and your luggage
(round-trip rates are $150 from Hualupai Hilltop to the
campground). Again, be sure to contact the trip in advance to
make arrangements.

The Havasupai Lodge in Supai has comfortable, air-conditioned
rooms, but no TVs or phones (doubles $80).

For the past several decades, banks have been losing billions of
dollars in customer assets to the mutual fund industry. Back in
the late 1970s and early 1980s, banks were regulated to limit the
amount of interest they could pay depositors. When interest rates
surged as inflation took hold, bank depositors looked longingly
at money market mutual funds, which were virtually identical to
bank savings accounts with one major difference: The yield on
money market mutual funds was much higher because such funds were
not subject to interest rate ceilings.

When bond and stock funds boomed in the 1980s, banks again got
left behind. Other government regulations, dating back to the
1930s, prevented banks from getting into the mutual fund
business.

Thanks to some lobbying and fancy organizational footwork, banks
jumped into the mutual fund fray and offered their depositors
more investment choices. Bank funds, however, generally charge
sales commissions and higher operating expenses and generally
have less-than-stellar performance relative to the best no-load
funds.

Studies have also indicated problems with investors' not
understanding that bank funds don't carry FDIC insurance. (Bank
brokers pitching funds to their customers are often more than
happy to allow this misunderstanding to persist.) The banking
industry is working on better disclosure, and some banks have
been coming out with no-load funds. But banks are still generally
not the best place to purchase mutual funds.

One of the big reasons why people love New Orleans is the
extraordinarily beautiful, old architecture. The delicate
gingerbread on an Eastlake Victorian home or the cast-iron
railing of an Italianate shotgun house starkly contrast with
plain, nearly identical suburban homes across the country. And
the sheer number and variety of architectural styles - from
the early 1800s Creole cottage to the 1940s bungalow - are
breathtaking compared to the cookie-cutter developments found
elsewhere.

The most common form of architecture is the classic shotgun.
Raised on brick piers, it's a narrow, long structure, where one
room lines up behind another. Many natives hated growing up in
one because of the lack of privacy; you have to go through the
bedrooms before you get to the kitchen, which was typically added
on to the back. (Some were lucky and lived in a camelback
shotgun, where the bedrooms were on the second floor.) If you
open the front and back doors and look down the hall, it gives
the appearance of a shotgun barrel. Or, some say it got its name
because you could shoot a shotgun through the doors and not hit
anything. The breezeway provided a form of air conditioning, as
did the brick piers because air flowed underneath the
floorboards. You can find this practical yet attractive style
throughout New Orleans and especially in what were working-class
neighborhoods, such as the Irish Channel.

You can find photos of other popular architecture styles -

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): The Old Unlisted Spouse Trick

One of the common mistakes that insurance agents continue to make
when insuring the cars of a married couple is to list the policy
in the name of only one of the spouses - usually the
husband. Besides the obvious sexism, this practice creates a
coverage concern. An unnamed spouse has automatic insurance only
while he or she lives in the household. If the spouse moves out,
the automatic coverage ends - even if the spouse is named on
the policy. Under many policies, if you, the unlisted spouse, are
not a resident of the listed spouse's household (for example, if
you separate for a long period), you may have coverage only if
you have your spouse's permission. It's important to know that
this exclusionary language is fairly universal, not just in auto
policies but in virtually every personal policy (covering homes,
boats, and so on).

What this means for you if you are, say, the wife who has moved
out during a separation, is that you must have your husband's
permission to drive your own car! Do you think it's possible that
during a bitter divorce proceeding and following an accident you
caused while on a date with another person, your soon-to-be ex
may angrily tell the adjuster, "There's no way I would have
given her permission to drive this car!" Is it likely that
an adjuster may ask that question? No. Is it possible? Yes. If
you're the person not listed on the policy, do you want to take
this chance?

And to rub salt in the wound, the spouse who isn't listed on the
policy doesn't receive notice if the policy is canceled for
nonpayment. Also, if one partner's car is damaged, the claims
check is made out to the spouse whose name is on the policy,
regardless of who the car belongs to.

So, when you get married, get every insurance policy listed in
both names, on page one. If you are either married or separated,
check your policies and, if any of them aren't in both spouses'
names, call your insurance company as soon as possible and get
the problem corrected.

with Catherine Howard's ghost in the "haunted gallery"
at Hampton Court that psychologists from the University of
Hertfordshire conducted an investigation to see if they could
find a scientific explanation for the phenomenon - not
surprisingly, the results were inconclusive. Catherine, the fifth
wife of King Henry VIII, was locked up in Hampton Court prior to
her beheading for adultery in 1542. One day she supposedly
escaped and in desperation ran along the 40-foot gallery to pound
on the king's door and beg for mercy. Sightings in this gallery
of a running, screaming apparition have been reported for
centuries.

Work done on fixer-upper houses falls into two broad categories
- structural repairs and renovations. Structural repairs are
changes you make to the property to bring it up to local health
and safety standards. Such work can include foundation repairs,
roof replacements, new electrical and plumbing system
installations, and so on - things that cost big bucks but
add relatively little value to the property. Ideally, you can get
a credit from the home's seller to do some, if not all, of the
necessary structural repairs. The less you have to take out of
your own pocket for corrective work, the more you have to spend
on renovations.

Renovations increase a fixer-upper's value by modernizing the
home. Remodeling an old kitchen, installing a second bathroom,
and adding a garage are a few examples of major renovations that
make your home more functional, more pleasant to live in, and
more valuable when you sell it.

Cosmetic renovations (painting, carpeting, landscaping, and the
like) also add value with far less expense and aggravation. The
ideal fixer-uppers to buy are ones that look awful but simply
need cosmetic fixes to look their best.

When writing a cover letter to send to a prospective employer,
keep in mind that your reader may be pressed for time. So you
should aim to write a concise, but thorough, cover letter. You
may wonder how being both concise and thorough at the same time
is possible. Think of this task as giving a lengthy explanation
in as few words as possible. Tell your reader as much about
yourself as you can, but don't make your reader wade through
extra words and unnecessary details. Consider the following
example:

I am a person who believes that the values of fervent
dedication, cooperative teamwork, dynamic leadership, and
adaptive creativity really make up the cornerstones and are
the crucial components of any totally successful sales
venture.

Yuck. Revised using concise, but thorough, language, the same
sentence can now read:

Dedication, teamwork, leadership, and creativity are
essential to successful sales.

Remember: Use short, simple words, sentences, and paragraphs.
Avoid cramming too many ideas into each paragraph. Logically
break long paragraphs into several short ones. And use simple,
direct language to get your point across.

(especially if it has an electronic compass), why you should
bother carrying a compass while you're geocaching. Here are some
good reasons why:

* Compasses don't need batteries to tell you which

* Compasses work in deep canyons and under thick tree
canopies. GPS receivers sometimes don't work under
these conditions.

* Water or extreme temperatures don't affect compasses.
In general, compasses are far less fragile compared

Neither Online Account Access nor Online Bill Payment is
difficult to use in Quicken. And despite the nightmares that
people with delusional paranoia may develop about electronic
banking, the service is safe, secure, and very solid.
Nevertheless, before you, too, jump onto the bandwagon, you
should probably consider a few points:

* If you want to use the Online Account Access feature in
Quicken, your bank must be part of the Quicken Online
Account Access program.

* To sign up for and use Online Account Access or Online
Bill Payment services, you need an Internet connection.

* You should be fairly comfortable with Quicken,
especially with account transactions and transferring
money between accounts. Therefore, if you're new to
Quicken, you should at least record a handful of
checks, make some deposits, and reconcile your account
before venturing into Online Account Access.

* Make sure that your records are completely up-to-date
and reconciled with the last statements you've received
from the bank.

This stuff usually isn't free. You bank will set the charges, but
a good guess is between $5 and $10 per month - and that adds
up over the course of a year. But in choosing to use Online
Account Access or Online Bill Payment, do consider the hidden
costs of the normal way of banking and paying bills. Gasoline,
time, cost of checks, and postage can all add up, and these
almost-hidden costs may make the costs of the online services
appear more reasonable.

Fall in Colorado starts off with a burst of color, but its end
can be a little bleak. It's fabulous because:

* Denver is at its sunniest and driest, and the
temperature here remains pretty temperate - 60s in
October, 50s in November. And the leaves first start
turning colors in early October, so the foliage season
lasts longer than in the mountains.

* Come autumn, the changing leaves in the mountains can
be nearly as extraordinary as the late-summer
wildflowers are. Rocky Mountain maple, Gambel oak, and
quaking aspen spatter the hills with red, orange, and
yellow, respectively, against a backdrop of evergreen
trees.

* The start of the school year means fewer people in the
parks and at the major attractions. You won't be alone,
but you won't feel cramped either, especially not in
October.

* Prices drop from their stratospheric elevations to more
reasonable levels.

Fall comes fast and early to the mountains, so the foliage show
is over by early October. Miss it and the only leaves you'll see
in the Rockies will be the ones on the ground. If you want to
experience a true Rocky-Mountain autumn, start planning your trip
now for next September. By mid October, snowstorms become an
acute possibility in the Rockies - although they won't
provide enough snow for good skiing - and it can get
brutally cold. By late October, even Denver is pretty frosty.

Generally, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA)
prohibits debt collectors from contacting third persons, or
others, about your debt, thus outlawing the once common tactic of
trying to shame people into paying a debt. But spouses and
guardians aren't considered third persons. So, any time a bill
collector contacts you, he can also contact spouses or guardians.

Under the statute, your parents may be contacted only if you're a
minor; otherwise they're considered third persons and are off
limits. Others not specifically mentioned in the law - like
siblings, uncles, aunts, grandparents, or living companions
- are always considered third persons.

A debt collector can contact your attorney, a credit-reporting
agency, and any co-debtors. She can also contact any person for
the purpose of locating you or obtaining your address, phone
number, or place of employment, provided that she doesn't already
have that information. But she should never reveal that you owe a
debt and generally may not contact the same person more than
once. When the collector knows that a lawyer represents you, she
must go through the attorney and can't contact others unless the
lawyer is unresponsive.

If a creditor has a judgment against you, the collector can also
contact others to enforce that judgment.

Almost always, a simple will is the will of choice for most
people. A simple will is a single legal document that applies
only to you (unlike a joint will for you and your spouse). A
simple will describes the following:

* Who you are, with enough information to clearly
identify the document as your will.

* The names of your beneficiaries, both people -
whether those people are family members or not -
and institutions, such as charities, and enough
information about the beneficiaries, such as their
addresses and birth dates so whoever is reading your
will can figure out to whom you're referring.

* The person's name that you're appointing to be the
executor of your will. The executor is the person who
is legally responsible for making sure that your
directions are carried out. You also need to appoint a
backup executor - or maybe even a backup to the
backup - if, for any reason, your designated
executor is unable to perform the official duties.

Always check with whomever you specify as an executor or
backup executor in your will before putting that person's
name in your will. You want to avoid unnecessary
complications that may arise if that person is unwilling or
unable to serve as your will's executor.

* Your directions as to who will care for your children
or for anyone else you are legally responsible.

* How you want your assets distributed, and to whom,
after you are gone.

Your simple will should be typewritten or in the form of a
computer printout. Other forms of your will, such as written in
your own handwriting or spoken, are usually filled with problems
and shouldn't be used.

Acapulco Bay is a stunning sight - night or day - that
practically cries out temptation. The area is chock full of
beaches, and here are a few of the great places to play.

Located 8 miles (13km) west of Acapulco Bay is Pie de la Cuesta.
The water here is too rough for swimming, but it's a great spot
for checking out big waves and the spectacular sunset -
especially over coco locos (drinks served in a fresh coconut with
the top whacked off) at one of the rustic beachfront restaurants
hung with hammocks. The area is known for excellent bird-watching
and the surrounding coconut plantations.

Back toward Acapulco, around the area near La Quebrada (where the
cliff divers perform), is Playa La Angosta, a small, sheltered,
and often-deserted cove. If you're staying in Old Acapulco, this
beach is great not only for its location, but also because it's
much less crowded than public beaches in Old Acapulco, and much
more dramatic in its setting - though generally too rough
for swimming.

South of downtown on the Peninsula de las Playas lie Caleta and
Caletilla, where you'll find bright colors, and plenty of
laughter, kids, and an almost carnival-like atmosphere. A small
outcropping of land that contains an aquarium and water park,
Magico Mundo Marino, separates the two beaches. In this area, you
find thatched-roofed restaurants, watersports equipment for rent,
and brightly painted boats that ferry passengers to Isla de la
Roqueta. You can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas for the
day. Mexican families favor these beaches because they're close
to several inexpensive hotels. In the late afternoon, fishermen
pull their colorful boats up on the sand; you can buy the fresh
catch of the day and, occasionally, oysters on the half shell.

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Assessing Finance Charges in QuickBooks

You can tell QuickBooks to assess finance charges on overdue
customer invoices. To do this, you first need to set up the
finance charge calculation rules. Then you can easily assess
finance charges on overdue amounts.

To set up the finance charge rules, choose Edit, Preferences.
When QuickBooks displays the Preferences dialog box, click the
Finance Charge icon and then the Company Preference tab. To tell
QuickBooks how it should calculate the finance charges, enter the
annual interest rate for calculating charges into the Annual
Interest Rate (%) box. Enter the minimum finance charge amount
that you will assess into the Minimum Finance Charge box. If you
want to create a grace period, enter the number of days into the
Grace Period (Days) box. Use the Finance Charge Account drop-down
list box to specify the income account to which finance charge
revenue should be credited. Select the Assess Finance Charges on
Overdue Finance Charges check box if you want to charge finance
charges on finance charges. Finally, use the Calculate Charges
From radio buttons to specify the date from which finance charges
should be calculated, and click OK to save your changes.

After you set up the finance charge rules, you can easily assess
finance charges on overdue invoices by choosing Customers, Assess
Finance Charges. QuickBooks displays the Assess Finance Charges
window, in which you can see all of the overdue invoices that
customers owe you and the finance charges owed.

When choosing your first saltwater fish tank, the number of
aquarium inhabitants your aquarium can accommodate may factor
into your decision. If you put too many fish into your tank, you
will overcrowd it, the filtration system will be overwhelmed, and
you will have serious water quality problems. In addition, fish
become stressed when they're crowded, and stress leads to disease
and death. (Have you ever been in an overcrowded elevator?)

Most aquarium enthusiasts use fish length and tank volume to
estimate the number of fish that a marine aquarium can hold.
Larger fish consume more oxygen and, therefore, require more
aquarium space.

You can probably accommodate one inch of fish per four gallons of
water for the first six months. Gradually increase fish density
to one inch per two gallons after this initial period. For
example, a 40-gallon aquarium should contain no more than 10
inches of fish for the first six months. After six months,
additional fish may be added gradually to increase the total
number of inches to 20. Keep in mind, however, that fish grow, so
your two-inch regal tang may grow to three inches in those six
months. Also, realize that this general rule doesn't compensate
for the shape of the fish. The six-inch eel is likely to require
less space than the six-inch grouper, so the general capacity
rule doesn't apply. If you plan to keep heavier fish, be more
conservative in your tank-capacity calculations.

It's better to err on the side of too few fish than too many.

legitimate expenses, however, aren't allowable.

For example, even though just about every college across the U.S.
requires students to have separate health insurance coverage to
attend school, these insurance expenses don't qualify under the
Hope Scholarship Credit program.

Besides health insurance costs, other expenses specifically
excluded include the following:

* Medical expenses (including student health fees). The
rationale behind this exclusion is that even if
students weren't going to school, they would still pay
for medical expenses in the normal course of life.

* Room and board. Although several federal loans programs
include room and board as allowable expenses, the Hope
Scholarship Credits does not.

* Transportation. Despite the fact that students might
have to commute to college, Hope Scholarship Credits
don't cover any travel expenses. Some students may find
this exclusion particularly weird because they might
have to stay home with their parents because college
residence expenses are also not covered.

at $295, makes for a great writing companion. The
program lets you interact with actual examples from
many well-known films. It includes Truby's Story
Structure Course along with a list of the 22 building
blocks of every great story. Add-ons are available that
help you write for specific genres such as romance,

If you're a salaried worker and your paycheck is deposited
automatically by your employer, you can schedule a deposit of
your paycheck within Quicken.

Not only that, you can also record how much of your gross income
is devoted to taxes, social security, IRAs or 401(k)s, health
plans, and what all so that you can keep track of stuff.

Get your most recent paycheck stub and choose Banking, Banking
Activities, Set Up My Paycheck As a Register Transaction. Then
answer the questions in the Paycheck Setup dialog box, clicking
the Next button as you go along. To schedule the paycheck
deposit, be sure to click the Yes button when Quicken asks
whether you want to be reminded automatically to enter your
paycheck deposit.

Summer months are the prime tourist season in Ohio, so you may
consider visiting in early fall. Late September and early October
are practically perfect in this part of the country. Amish
country, however, can be crowded because the harvest season is
the most popular time to visit.

Freak weather conditions called "the lake effect" can
hit in late fall, especially snow and ice storms along Lake Erie.
Pack a variety of clothing weights and options because weather
can change suddenly. During autumn in the Midwest, it can be in
the 80s one day and the 40s the next.

Allow a week to 10 days for a leisurely drive around the back
roads of Ohio, more if you're a dedicated antiques shopper or
museum buff.

Ohio is chockablock with cafes, grocery stores, farm markets, and
chain supermarkets, so you'll have no problem stocking edibles.
The Amish country is a great place to pick up locally made
cheeses, especially Baby Swiss from Guggisberg Cheese Company in
the hamlet of Charm. You'll see farmers markets in many towns,
roadside produce stands, even small-town growers selling corn,
apples, gourds, and pumpkins in their front yards with a
help-yourself table, honor system cash box, and hand-lettered
sign.

On back roads, drive slowly and exercise caution because you may
round a turn and run up behind a large, slow-moving tractor, a
horse-drawn Amish carriage, or even a herd of cattle crossing the
road and headed for the barn. Country roads in the Midwest also
are famous for making sudden right or left turns at a property
boundary where a farmer didn't want his land bisected for the
sake of a straight road.

Every football game starts with a coin toss. Captains of each
team come to the center of the field, where the referee holds a
coin. In the NFL, the coin toss is restricted to three captains
from each team. In college football, four players may
participate. However, only one player from the visiting team
calls heads or tails, and that player must do so before the
official tosses the coin into the air (hence the name coin toss).
If that player calls the toss correctly, his team gets to choose
one of two privileges:

* Which team receives the kickoff: Generally, teams want
to start off the game on offense and have the
opportunity to score as early as possible, so the team
who wins the toss usually opts to receive. They are
known as the receiving team. The referee, by swinging
his leg in a kicking motion, then points to the other
team's captains as the kicking team.

* Which goal his team will defend: Instead of receiving
the kickoff, the captain may elect to kick off and
choose a goal to defend. Captains sometimes do this if
they believe that weather will be a factor. In choosing
which goal to defend, the player believes that his team
will have the wind at its back for the second quarter
and the crucial final quarter of the game.

The team that loses the toss is stuck with the other option. Of
course, if the winning captain chooses the ball, the losing
captain does have the choice of which goal to defend.

The team that earns the right to receive the ball gets the ball
via a kickoff. The kicking team's placekicker places the ball in
a holder (called a tee) on his team's 30-yard line (NFL), 35-yard
line (college), or 40-yard line (high school). The tee is 1 inch
tall in the NFL and 2 inches high in high school and college. The
kicker then runs toward the ball and kicks it toward the other
team.

At the far end of the field from the kicker, one or more
returners awaits the kickoff. The returner's goal is to catch the
ball and run it as far back toward the opponents' goal line as he
can. After the return is complete, the first set of downs begins.

Most companies use an underwriter to take their businesses public
because the underwriter performs due diligence work, has a legion
of institutional buyers, and can share in the market risk. There
are also investments called Direct Public Offerings (DPOs).

DPOs are when a company does not use an underwriter (they are
very expensive) but instead takes its shares to the public market
by itself. The only document filed is the registration statement
with the SEC. There is no prospectus and no underwriter analyst
reports to provide comfort for these types of offerings. Rather,
the risk of due diligence falls on the individual investor.

You may be familiar with common hardware construction sets, but
the addition of a computer brain makes a construction set such as
LEGO MindStorms a true robot construction set. To truly utilize
this type of kit, you need to have a PC. The kit includes an
integrated development environment (IDE), which you load into
your PC to help you compose the robot's software control program,
as well as a download cable for downloading programs to your
robot. The advantage of computer control adds a new dimension to
construction sets and allows you to build a truly autonomous
robot.

And if you don't like the robot you've built, you can disassemble
it and rebuild it another way. Of course, what can sometimes be
an advantage can also be a disadvantage because the assembly
isn't permanent.

With some construction sets, parts may not stay assembled as you
would like and the robot may fall apart at an inopportune time.
To remedy this, you can tape, rubber band, bolt, or even glue
your parts together to avoid the inevitable hardware breakdown.
However, use glue only when you feel you won't ever want to
disassemble your robot.

With prefabricated sensor and actuator modules and a
prefabricated programmable central robot brain, robot
construction sets such as LEGO MindStorms
[ http://www.legomindstorms.com/ ] and Fischertechnik
[ http://www.fischertechnik.de ] have all the parts necessary to
construct a robot.

Kits like these have proprietary connectors, so you can connect
only their devices, such as motors, lights, and IR sensors.
However, even though you're limited as to what you can connect to
the proprietary robot brain, a construction set does provide many
great options. You can create a robot that can follow a line,
detect and follow a wall, sort cards, or even compete in a robot
contest.

Who was King Arthur? No one knows. There has been far too much
poetry and prose written about him in the last 1,000 years for
anyone to tell for sure. There aren't any accurate records from
the time when he supposedly lived.

The historical Arthur probably lived in the fifth, sixth, or
seventh century CE, at a time when Roman rule in Britain was in
decay and the Welsh and English kingdoms that replaced Roman
government were still in the development stage. Various tribes
fought one another and a group called the Saxons invaded much of
Britain.

Arthur may have been a leader of the Britons, the native British
people who tried to repulse the Saxon threat. He may have been a
Welsh hero. Some people suggest he was a descendant of the
occupying Romans. A popular explanation is that he was a British
cavalry general named Arturius who fought the Saxons and defeated
them in the battle of Badon Hill in 517.

Back in the twelfth century, people found a cross in Glastonbury
Abbey with a Latin caption on it reading "Here lies buried
the famous King Arthur, in the Island of Avalon." The cross
was last seen in the eighteenth century, but drawings of it
survive today. Was this Arthur's actual tomb or a publicity stunt
by the monks of Glastonbury Abbey? No one knows.

No one can tell for sure who Arthur was or what he did, if he
even existed. Does that matter? Not really. Instead of being a
king out of history, King Arthur is a literary figure with a long
and popular lifespan. Everyone loved tales of Arthur right from
the very beginning (in medieval times, that is) and writers have
yet to stop embellishing his story.

Many users of point-and-shoot cameras never take their flash off
of autoflash mode, but most cameras come with a mode called fill
flash (or fill-in flash, flash-on, anytime flash, or something
close. They all mean the same thing: that the flash fires every
time you take a picture.

Why would you want flash when the subject is bright already? To
fill unwanted shadows with light. High sun in particular creates
unattractive hollows under facial features. Great Aunt Gretyl
might come to your Labor Day cookout wearing an old-fashioned,
wide-brimmed hat. You want to document what could be her last
earthly appearance, but the brim of her hat throws her entire
kindly face into darkness. Add fill flash and that shadow
lightens up.

Fill flash is really as much a no-brainer as autoflash - and
no less automatic in its operation, pumping out the right amount
of light for the occasion. You have to select fill flash with the
flash mode button, of course. But once you do, you can leave fill
flash on, and if you go indoors, it does the job there, too.

And how do you get fill flash if your point-and-shoot doesn't
have any way to display a fill-flash icon? Even cameras with few
controls often have a fill-flash button, usually marked with a
lightning bolt. But to get fill flash, you must hold down this
button until the flash-ready light comes on, and only then take
the picture. You can do the same thing with most one-time-use
cameras.

Fill flash compensates for the inability of photographic film, or
the image sensor in a digital camera, to capture good detail in
both the brightest and the darkest parts of some subjects. Though
fill flash adds the same amount of light to both bright and
shadowy areas, the extra light is more visible in the shadows.

Juneau's mist-shrouded airport, wedged between ocean and
mountain, is tough to get into and can be a hair-raising place to
land. That means that when you fly to Juneau, you can end up
somewhere else, instead, maybe Anchorage or Seattle, or maybe
even some little town that you've never heard of. You never know.
Landing in places other than Juneau is such a common experience,
that the locals have a special word for it: to overhead. Here's
an example of how you may hear it used:

"Why did you miss the fishing trip?"

"I overheaded three times and ended up sleeping in
Ketchikan."

When your flight overheads, the airline puts you on the next
plane back to Juneau. Even so, you may overhead again. Although
people sometimes bounce back and forth like Ping-Pong balls, the
airlines won't pay for hotel rooms or give you any refunds. Your
only protection is a relaxed attitude, a loose itinerary that
provides you with a chance for making up for lost time, and trip
cancellation insurance.

When you're already in Juneau and the planes overhead, you're
stuck there until the weather improves. You can call ahead, but
the airline often wants you at the airport just in case the plane
makes it in. That's why Juneau residents have the Channel
Channel. It's a cable TV channel that silently broadcasts a view
of the Gastineau Channel near the airport (hence the name).
Locals can tell from that image whether going to the airport is
worth the effort. An example of everyday usage:

"Did you see the Channel Channel? They'll overhead.
Let's have another beer."

It is given in business that success requires hard work. But not
every organization has the same definition of hard work,
especially when considering the number of hours that constitute a
typical workweek. You'll find out soon enough when trying to
make your mark early at a new job - mostly through
observation - what the guidelines are in your company. Take
note of how early most people arrive, how late they leave, and
how laden they are with paperwork when they walk out the door.
Yet another indication is how often you find people at the office
on weekends.

The purpose here isn't to judge what's right or wrong but to
understand the prevailing style in the company. Even if you are
unusually efficient and can get your work done without working a
60- or 70-hour work week, the fact that you're arriving a little
later and leaving earlier than most people could be construed as

The lights of a city mask the stars, leaving no chance to see the
world beyond earth unless you step away from the city and gaze
skyward from a mountaintop or an open field. For most
city-trapped folk, seeing a million pinpricks of light twinkling
against the inky-black backdrop of a night sky is a new
experience. Stargazing takes practice and patience, but with a
star wheel (available at most nature, outdoor specialty, or hobby
stores) and a star guide, you'll open up a new world for yourself
and your family or friends.

The following are some favorite and easily found stars and
constellations:

* North Star. You can locate this star, also known as
Polaris, if you can find the Big Dipper. The beauty of
the North Star is that it stays in one place in the
sky, and always to the north of you. To pick it out of
the mass of other twinkling stars, find the Big Dipper
and then look to the two stars that make up the lip of
the dipper's ladle. The North Star lies above the two
stars, known as pointer stars, in a relatively straight
line, approximately four to six times the distance
between the two stars.

* Cassiopeia. This star was named for the wife of King
Cepheus, an Ethiopian king. According to mythology, she
was turned into a constellation. Look for a five-star
cluster shaped like a "W" or an "M"
on the north/northeast horizon just before midnight in
a summer sky.

* Ursa Major. You can find this constellation (also known
as the Great Bear) near the Big Dipper, which actually
makes up a part of the bear. The dipper makes up the
bear's back, with the handle standing in for the bear's
nose. Three pairs of stars make up the bear's paws.

* Bootes. Also known as the Herdsman, this constellation

Quicken 2004 arranges all of its features - whistles, bells,

centers gets its own button.

Quicken lists the features within a financial activity center
underneath the financial activity center button. You can collapse

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Making Beeswax Cosmetics

Beeswax makes fantastic, natural cosmetics Â which, in turn, make
treasured gifts. The process is surprisingly easy, and the
ingredients readily available Â beeswax from a beekeeper;
food-grade oil from the grocery store (extra virgin olive oil
works well); and essential oils from the health food store.

For making Beeswax Lip Balm, you can use any good quality
food-grade oil, but sweet Almond Oil or Extra Virgin Olive Oil
work best. You can add any edible essential oil to the lip balm,
but this recipe calls for peppermint.

Ingredients:

1 part beeswax by dry weight (for example, 1 ounce of
beeswax by weight)

4 parts food grade oil by liquid volume (for example, 4
ounces of oil by volume)

A few drops of peppermint oil

1. In the top of a double boiler, melt the beeswax and oil
over medium heat. Stir continuously with a wire whisk
until wax has completely melted.

2. Remove from the heat and add a few drops of peppermint
oil. Continue stirring as the mixture cools and
thickens.

3. Before it completely cools and sets, pour the warm
mixture into small containers.

4. Let the balm cool completely before placing the lids on
the containers.

Beeswax Hand Cream is smooth, creamy and not too oily. This hand
cream works better than anything you can buy commercially.

Ingredients:

1 part beeswax by dry weight (for example, 1 ounce of
beeswax by weight)

6 parts olive oil by liquid volume (for example, 6 ounces of
oil by liquid volume)

A few drops of essential oil (such as Lavender, Chamomile,
Rose or Lemon Verbena). You may add any essential oil or
leave it out entirely to enjoy the natural sweet scent of
the beeswax.

You'll find far more top-notch courses in Scotland than you'll

* The Old Course. Arguably the most famous golf course in
the world, all the greats have played here, including
Mary Queen of Scots. It offers two famously difficult
holes: the "Sea" hole (11th) and the
"Road" hole (17th) - perhaps the only
hole you'll ever find where you must play off the road.

* Gleneagles Kings. One of the most exhilarating places
in the world to golf, Gleneagles is world famous for
testing the skills of the best players. Much effort
went into the course's creation and layout, and the
spot is as beautiful as it is challenging.

* Machrihanish. The conditions here are unmatched. Huge
greens and unique fairways make this a challenge for
high and low handicappers alike. The first hole is
famously known for offering an opportunity - when
the tide is in - to drive out over the Atlantic
Ocean.

* Dunbar Course. This stunning natural links course
follows the contours of the shoreline and offers
unforgettable views across the sea. The most
challenging holes are around the turn - the 9th to
the 12th - with no let-up on the closing stretch,
because even a mild slice will end up on the beach.

* Gullane. This is the best course near Edinburgh (only
20 minutes away), and it's regularly a qualifying
course for the British Open. Course #1 is the best and
most challenging; if your handicap isn't low enough,
you can play one of the other two courses.

* Western Gailes. With its unique layout of greens tucked
away in hollows, the course requires finesse, accuracy,
and precision. This natural course is one of the best
in Scotland and easily the best in the Glasgow area.

* Crail Balcomie Links Course. This excellent course
follows a magnificent coastline, with every hole in
sight of the water. The clubhouse offers panoramic
views of the North Sea. With continual improvements and
modifications, the course is gaining a great reputation
for being one of the most challenging in the country.

* Glasgow Gailes. A compact, demanding, and well-groomed
course, Glasgow Gailes can be fierce, especially if
you're trying to drive in a southwest wind. The
flanking heather at nearly every hole makes for a
uniquely Scottish (and wonderfully fragrant) hazard.
