TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Converting from Quicken to Microsoft Money

Microsoft Money offers a wizard that you can use to convert a
Quicken data file to a Money file. Actually, the wizard doesn't
convert the file. It makes a copy of the Quicken data file,
converts the copy, and leaves the original data file intact. So
if you decide after all that you like Quicken better than Money,
you can go back.

Follow these steps to convert a Quicken data file to Microsoft
Money:

1. Close Quicken if the program is running, and open
Money.

2. Choose File, Convert Quicken File.

3. Find and select your Quicken data file.

Unless you've tinkered with Quicken's default settings, the
Quicken data file is called Qdata.QDG, Qdata.QDF,
Quicken.QDF, or Quicken.QDT, and it is located in the
C:\Quickenw folder.

4. Click Convert.

5. In the Back Up dialog box, click the Back Up button to
back up whatever data file is currently open in Money.

6. Click Next and follow the on-screen directions.

After the conversion is complete, a Summary of the Conversion
window appears and lists account balances in Quicken and account
balances in Money. Compare the two to make sure that the Quicken
data file was converted successfully. You can click Save, save
the file, open it in your word processing program, and print it.

TODAY'S eTIP(TM): Driving the Scenic Windward Coast

Stand in the heart of Waikiki with your back to the ocean. To
your right, you'll see a mountain range called the Koolaus
(koo-OO-laus); on the other side of them is the east coast of
Oahu. This windward-facing coast is the island's wettest side
and, therefore, its most lush and gorgeous. Lined with suburban
beach communities and some breathtakingly beautiful beaches, it's
well worth seeing.

Three highways will get you from the city to the Windward Coast
in about 20 minutes or so: the Pali Highway (Highway 61), the
Likelike (lee-kay-LEE-kay) Highway (Highway 63), and the H-3
freeway, all of which cut right through the mountains. Your best
bet from Waikiki is to take the H-1 to the Pali Highway. After
you go through the tunnel, turn left on Kamehameha Highway
(Highway 83); this coastal highway will be your roadway for the
rest of the trip, whether you choose to follow it all the way to
Haleiwa (about 1-1/2 hours without stops), whether you're heading
to the Polynesian Cultural Center (the South Pacific cultural
theme park, or whether you're simply enjoying the ultralush
scenery and some of best beaches in the islands.

Dominating the west side of Oahu is the island's second mountain
range, the Waianae (wah-ee-AN-eh) mountains. Beyond this ridge is
the hot, dry leeward side of the island. You're by no means
prohibited from heading there, but there's not much to see, and
locals prefer to keep this one area of heavily touristed Oahu to
themselves. Unless you're heading to the area's one
master-planned resort community, Ko Olina, up to Waianae to meet
a scheduled cruise with Dolphin Excursions, or for some other
prearranged reason, honor the local wishes and concentrating your
efforts on exploring the other parts of this wonderfully
multifaceted island instead.

Suppose you've come up with a new software program that helps
small business owners manage all the activities of their business
just like the big companies do with their enterprise management
software. You can let the customer select for you the business
model that you will use in selling your product:

* The customer uses the program free of charge, but a
small window in the lower left-hand corner of the
computer screen displays advertising while the program
is running. In other words, in this model, your end
user isn't your customer. The companies that display
their advertisements are your customers, and you
receive your revenues from them.

* The customer purchases the program for a one-time fee
that entitles the customer either to download it from
your Web site or request delivery of a standard
shrink-wrapped CD version.

* By continuously come up with new versions and
enhancements, you encourage the customer to purchase
more from you -- another stream of revenue.

Going one step further with this example, let's say you also
establish a Web site for users of your program. There, they can
find additional information and entertaining features. So how do
you make money off that? Well, again, selling space for
advertising is one way, but you can also charge a membership fee
that puts your users into an elite club, perhaps giving them
access to personal application services that you host.

When training in the martial arts, you increase your

Although no personal preferences are available in QuickBooks for
sales tax, company preferences do exist. (In the Preferences
dialog box, click the Sales Tax pane, and then the Company
Preferences tab.) The Do You Charge Sales Tax? radio buttons,
which appear near the top of the tab, control whether you can
even charge sales tax within QuickBooks. You select the radio
button -- Yes or No -- that answers the question.

The Owe Sales Tax radio button lets you indicate when the taxing
authority says you owe sales tax: as of the invoice date (which
means the taxing authority requires accrual-basis accounting) or
upon receipt of payment (which means the taxing authority allows
cash-basis accounting).

The Default Sales Tax Codes boxes let you define what code
QuickBooks should use to identify taxable and non-taxable sales.
By default, QuickBooks uses the clever "tax" code for taxable
sales and the equally clever "non" code for non-taxable sales.
However, you can select the Add New entry from the Taxable
drop-down list box or the Non-Taxable drop-down list box and use
the dialog box that QuickBooks displays to create your own
taxable and non-taxable codes.

The Pay Sales Tax radio buttons (Monthly, Quarterly, and
Annually) let you tell QuickBooks how frequently you must remit
sales tax amounts. You select the radio button that corresponds
to your sales tax payment frequency.

The Set Up Sales Tax Items boxes let you set up an item for the
sales tax that you will need to charge on invoices. You can also
indicate the default, or most common, sales tax item that you'll
want to include by entering this sales tax item name into the
Most Common Sales Tax box. To add the sales tax item by using the
Most Common Sales Tax box, select the Add New entry from the
drop-down list box and complete the dialog box that QuickBooks
displays. The New Item dialog box lets you name the sales tax
item and identify the sales tax rate. The Mark Taxable Amounts
with "T" When Printing check box, if selected, tells QuickBooks
to flag taxable amounts on an invoice with the code "T."

If you want to see some of Arizona's most spectacular scenery and
visit an Indian reservation, this canyon, south of the central
part of Grand Canyon National Park, fills the bill. Home to some
500 Havasupai people, Havasu Canyon is famous for its

out of the canyon -- is pretty much all you can do there; the
village consists of fairly run-down homes. If you can stand being
forced to relax in a beautiful spot, though, this area may just
be your place. Keep in mind that Havasu Canyon is a more than a
little bit off the beaten path; you must hike, ride, or book a
helicopter flight to enter, and you must reserve in advance.

From Williams, take I-40 west 44 miles to Seligman, where the
road splits; continue on Highway 66 west for 26 miles and turn
north on Indian Route 18. Drive 60 miles to Haulupai Hilltop,
where the 8-mile-long Hualapai Trail, a fairly precipitous,
winding route (at least for the first mile; it levels off after
that) descends into Supai, Havasu Canyon's only settlement and
home to the Havasupai Tourist Enterprise
[ http://www.havasupaitribe.com/ ] (928-448-2121). A limited
number of people are allowed in (fee $20 per person), so you must
contact the tribe, even if you're just planning to hike. The
Havasupai Tourist Enterprise isn't always easy to reach by phone,
but keep trying.

If you don't want to hike down, contact the tourist enterprise
and arrange for a pack horse or mule to take you and your luggage
(round-trip rates are $150 from Hualupai Hilltop to the
campground). Again, be sure to contact the trip in advance to
make arrangements.

The Havasupai Lodge in Supai has comfortable, air-conditioned
rooms, but no TVs or phones (doubles $80).

For the past several decades, banks have been losing billions of
dollars in customer assets to the mutual fund industry. Back in
the late 1970s and early 1980s, banks were regulated to limit the
amount of interest they could pay depositors. When interest rates
surged as inflation took hold, bank depositors looked longingly
at money market mutual funds, which were virtually identical to
bank savings accounts with one major difference: The yield on
money market mutual funds was much higher because such funds were
not subject to interest rate ceilings.

When bond and stock funds boomed in the 1980s, banks again got
left behind. Other government regulations, dating back to the
1930s, prevented banks from getting into the mutual fund
business.

Thanks to some lobbying and fancy organizational footwork, banks
jumped into the mutual fund fray and offered their depositors
more investment choices. Bank funds, however, generally charge
sales commissions and higher operating expenses and generally
have less-than-stellar performance relative to the best no-load
funds.

Studies have also indicated problems with investors' not
understanding that bank funds don't carry FDIC insurance. (Bank
brokers pitching funds to their customers are often more than
happy to allow this misunderstanding to persist.) The banking
industry is working on better disclosure, and some banks have
been coming out with no-load funds. But banks are still generally
not the best place to purchase mutual funds.

One of the big reasons why people love New Orleans is the
extraordinarily beautiful, old architecture. The delicate
gingerbread on an Eastlake Victorian home or the cast-iron
railing of an Italianate shotgun house starkly contrast with
plain, nearly identical suburban homes across the country. And
the sheer number and variety of architectural styles - from
the early 1800s Creole cottage to the 1940s bungalow - are
breathtaking compared to the cookie-cutter developments found
elsewhere.

The most common form of architecture is the classic shotgun.
Raised on brick piers, it's a narrow, long structure, where one
room lines up behind another. Many natives hated growing up in
one because of the lack of privacy; you have to go through the
bedrooms before you get to the kitchen, which was typically added
on to the back. (Some were lucky and lived in a camelback
shotgun, where the bedrooms were on the second floor.) If you
open the front and back doors and look down the hall, it gives
the appearance of a shotgun barrel. Or, some say it got its name
because you could shoot a shotgun through the doors and not hit
anything. The breezeway provided a form of air conditioning, as
did the brick piers because air flowed underneath the
floorboards. You can find this practical yet attractive style
throughout New Orleans and especially in what were working-class
neighborhoods, such as the Irish Channel.
